Kirkland by Bike: Where to Go and What to See

In a place where natural beauty and outdoor adventure abound, it only makes sense that one of the best ways to explore your surroundings is on two wheels. With an array of cycling lanes, paved paths, and bike-friendly trails, discovering Kirkland’s diverse restaurants, wineries, and art galleries by bike is simple.

Here are some of our favorite routes, from the new Cross Kirkland Corridor running through the heart of the city to the scenic lakefront trails near The Woodmark.

The Cross Kirkland Corridor

Chainline Brewing located on the Cross Kirkland Corridor biking trail.

Formerly an abandoned rail line, the picturesque Cross Kirkland Corridor opened in early 2015 as a multi-use path extending from Kirkland’s southern border through the northern Totem Lake district. Along with easy access to most of the city and the rest of the much larger 42-mile Eastside Rail Corridor, the crushed-gravel path offers intermittent views of Lake Washington and Seattle’s spectacular skyline throughout its 5.75 miles.

Chainline Brewing welcomes cyclists and joggers with a dog-friendly deck that overlooks the corridor about a mile north of The Woodmark – making it the perfect place for a relaxing stopover (often with food trucks) – and there are number of destinations just off the path that are worth a visit too. Check out DERU Market downtown for delectable wood-fired pizzas, and near Totem Lake, a unique enclave of art galleries and wineries including The Evergreen Association of Fine Arts, ryan james fine arts, Waving Tree Winery, and Northwest Cellars.

Access the Cross Kirkland Corridor at 60th Street about a half-mile from the hotel.

Downtown to Juanita

Bike to Cactus Restaurant in downtown Kirkland, Washington.

As scenic as it is lively, the road from downtown to Juanita can be one of the most enjoyable areas to bike in Kirkland with a dedicated cycling lane on Market Street.

Before you set off, spend some time in the vibrant downtown district exploring the neighboring Howard/Mandville and Parklane art galleries and grabbing a bite to eat at Cactus Restaurant (farm-to-table Southwestern, Spanish, and Mexican cuisine) or Bottle and Bull (tapas and craft cocktails). The nearby Heritage Park also offers beautiful, lakefront views of Seattle and a historic archway covered in greenery – once the entrance to Kirkland Junior High School.

1.5 miles to the north, you can stop to watch the wildlife in Juanita Bay Park with boardwalks over the wetlands, and a little further up the road on Juanita Drive, Juanita Beach Park offers swimming and fishing areas as well as beach volleyball.

Lake Washington Boulevard

Biking alongside Lake Washington in Kirkland.

Of many streets with cycling lanes in Kirkland, Lake Washington Boulevard is another favorite for its lovely scenery – from sailboats to verdant waterfront parks to the Yarrow Bay Wetlands – and family-friendly nature.

Starting at The Woodmark, head north to enjoy waterfront vistas from numerous neighborhood parks including Marsh Park and David E. Brink Park before arriving in downtown. To the south, Lake Washington Boulevard takes you along the water to one of the largest wildlife conservancies on Lake Washington, Yarrow Bay Wetlands – where you can enjoy a serene stroll through nature while keeping an eye out for great blue herons, ospreys, bald eagles, turtles, and beavers.

Back at Carillon Point, wrap up your cycling adventure with a meal at Carillon Kitchen (healthy, farm-to-table salads and wraps) or one of The Woodmark’s two acclaimed restaurants, bin on the lake and Beach Cafe.

The Woodmark provides complimentary Beach Cruiser rentals for guests based on availability and seasonality. For additional information, contact our front desk team at 425.822.3700.
