In Italy, on Christmas eve, or La Vigilia, most families observe a partial fast, in which no meat should be served. In true Italian form, this dinner has grown into something quite un-fastlike. The feast of the seven fishes may contain different numbers of courses featuring seafood, seven for the sacraments, ten for the stations of the cross, or 12 or 13 for the apostles plus Jesus.
